Operation Alien Version 1.2 7/7/97
Welcome to Operation Alien, the world's first HTML door game with
a www internet style look and feel. This game offers SVGA graphics,
stereo music, stereo sound effects, hyperlinks, beautiful fonts,
picture backgrounds, and original soundtracks. Based on the Roswell
UFO crash incident of 1947, we incorporated real pictures of the
Extraterrestrial Beings that were recovered. Actual images are used
whenever possible for extra realism, so if you are offended by
medical surgical procedures you might want to skip this game.
********************************* I-COMM **********************************
Operation Alien is a BBS door game but it uses a technology called HTML
just like the World Wide Web does. HTML allows us to deliver SVGA images
and stereo sounds and hyperlinks but you need special modem software
to make it work. There are probably a number of freeware or shareware
internet modem browsers available but we only know of one, the I-Comm
WWW internet modem browser. It's a combination modem terminal software
(that you can use for calling BBS's much like Procom Plus, Qmodem, Telix,
or Window's Terminal) and internet browser (such as Netscape). I-comm is
about 450 KB in size, a Windows program, and available from our BBS.
We don't make I-comm, although we wish we had. Call a BBS that has
Operation Alien door game using the I-comm terminal. Go to the door
games area and launch Operation Alien. Switch to browser mode. Then
go to http://www.alien.com, just like you would if you were surfing
the web. The game should start a few seconds later.
I-comm may be obtained from www.talentcom.com, or Hypernet Software BBS.
****************************** I-COMM CACHE *******************************
Internet browsers typically keep a copy of all web pages in a cache
subdirectory. I-comm uses c:\i-comm\cache on our systems. While it's nice
to have Operation Alien web pages in the cache subdirectory so that you
can play the game locally you should delete all of them from time to time.
Otherwise you wont be able to update some of the files the next time you
play the game. You wont be able to see how the health of the alien
has changed since the last time you played (Did another BBS Doctor
damage the patient?) (Have any new BBS Doctors joined the game?)
unless you delete the contents of the cache subdirectory.
Sometimes the files in the cache subdirectory get corrupted and strange
behavior can result. That can happen when surfing internet also.
We delete the contents of the cache subdirectory about once a day.
****************************** INSTALLATION *******************************
This software installs as if it were a door program or door game. On our
TAG 2.7 BBS, we unzipped alien10.zip into a c:\bbs\alien directory. We
created a batch file called alien.bat in c:\bbs using DOS EDIT, the file
looks like this:
copy c:\bbs\door.sys c:\bbs\alien
cd c:\bbs\alien
alien12.exe
cd c:\bbs
***************************** ZMODEM DRIVERS ******************************
Examine alien12.ini with DOS EDIT, Window's Notepad or any other text editor.
Note the line "zmodem protocol driver". Here you can use any zmodem protocol
driver you want, including DSZ and CEXYZ. CEXYZ is compatible with Winfossil.
By modifiying this line, you can use any zmodem protocol, any COM port,
any fossil, and it should work with Windows95 also.
*************************** RESETTING THE GAME ****************************
To reset the game, go to the subdirectory where all the Operation Alien
files are stored (on our system it's c:\bbs\alien) and type reset, then
press the ENTER key. The game should be back to it's initial score
(moderate health of the Extraterrestrial Being).
********************************* DOOR.SYS ********************************
We use DOOR.SYS as a drop file. We left it in the collection of files just
in case you have a problem and want to compare your DOOR.SYS to ours.
If you are also using DOOR.SYS you will overwrite the file. If you use
another kind of drop file such as dorinfo1.def, MAKE SURE YOU DELETE
DOOR.SYS.
THIS GAME WILL NOT WORK WITH 2 DROP FILES IN THE SAME DIRECTORY
AS ALIEN12.EXE.
****************************** WANT TO HELP? ******************************
Please stop by our BBS or website, we love to have visitors. Please tell us
how you like Operation Alien and if there are any additional features
that you would like to see.
********************************* FREEWARE ********************************
Alien12.zip is freeware, please distribute freely and have fun with it.
We hope that you enjoy this game as much as we have.
******************************** HOWTO.ANS ********************************
Howto.ans and howto.asc are instruction files that tell callers how to
start the game. If you wish to modify them, go ahead. If you are outside
the USA you might want to translate them into your language. If callers are
having problems getting Operation Alien to work, you could add additional
instructions here. Howto.asc may be edited with DOS EDIT. Howto.ans may
be edited with THE DRAW.
********************************* UPGRADE ********************************
Since Operation Alien is such a big program and we already have version 1.0
available on DDSDOORS a small upgrade is released called alien12a.zip. It is
Operation Alien version 1.2 but only the executable and some maintenance
files. It's only about 150 KB and easier to download. Just unzip all the
alien12a.zip files and copy them to your "ALIEN" subdirectory. You might
want to clean up a few files that you wont need: alien1.exe, alien1.ini.
*************************** THE REGISTERED VERSION ************************
Alien20.zip is a bigger and better version of alien10.zip. It also
includes technical support, email, scorekeeping, and is winnable.
Alien20.zip costs US $ 9.95 or the equivalent in any major
foreign currency. You may download alien20.zip from Hypernet
Software BBS, or we can upload it to your BBS, ftp it to your
website, or if you're in the USA we can mail a copy to you on
3.5 inch or 5.25 inch floppy diskette. If you are outside the USA
and want alien20.zip mailed to you on a floppy diskette, please
include an additional US $ 3.00 for shipping and handling. Thank You.
